America’s First Cannabis College
Oaksterdam University is a great place to learn about the history of cannabis, its impact on our culture and economy, as well as how it can be used for better health. Oaksterdam was founded in 2007 by Richard Lee who also put Proposition 19 into motion that same year. The school offers classes all day long from courses such as “Cannabis Horticulture” to “Politics and Economics of Cannabis. Oaksterdam is dedicated to teaching people about safe, legal cannabis use as well as providing the opportunity for students looking into starting their own business in the industry or simply learning more about it.
Curriculum
The Curriculum at Oaksterdam University is a blend of cannabis science, business, and legal studies. The institution was founded in 2007 by Richard Lee with the goal to provide students with marketable knowledge about cannabis cultivation techniques, horticulture sciences, cooking with marijuana, medical applications of cannabis, and more. Oaksterdam has also become known for its activism efforts aimed at changing public perceptions about cannabis and the industry.
The Oaksterdam curriculum is divided into two tracks, each taking approximately 16 weeks to complete. The first track provides students with comprehensive knowledge of growing marijuana indoors as well as in greenhouses outdoors. Students learn how to cultivate plants from clones or cuttings, use hydroponic cultivation techniques, manage pests and diseases, and harvest dried buds. Oaksterdam students also learn about the drying, curing, and grading processes for cannabis as well as how to use various laboratory testing methods to determine cannabinoid content.
The second track focuses on business-related topics such as state and federal laws that govern medical marijuana distribution, marketing strategies for dispensaries and other retail outlets, legal issues related to medical marijuana, and how to conduct Oaksterdam University’s own business model through a case study analysis.
Opposition
Opposition to Oaksterdam University is primarily from conservative billionaires and fundamentalist Christians who do not support cannabis reform. Oaksterdam University has been a driving force behind the development of the legal medical marijuana industry in California since 2007 when voters passed Proposition 215 allowing for its use within state borders.
Oaksterdam University is a non-profit school that offers classes on cannabis cultivation, cooking with cannabis, and legal issues surrounding its use. Oaksterdam has been influential in the marijuana policy debate because of its focus on science rather than propaganda or fear-mongering rhetoric. Oaksterdam also provides training for those who want to become entrepreneurs within the industry by providing courses on how to open a dispensary or cultivation center. Oaksterdam is the first school of its kind in the United States and offers courses that are approved by California’s Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE) and the International Association for Cannabis as Medicine (IACM).
