Mosswood Park is one of the many green spaces in Oakland, California. With a variety of trees and plants that offer plenty of shade for a summer day picnic, Mosswood Park also has an open field for kids to play soccer or football. And on the weekends, you can hear live music from people who are out enjoying the park with their families.
Ever since the dogs-in-parks law changed in April 2014 and allowed on-leash dog visitation to this park, people have been using it more. What with its Mosswood Dog Play Area (offering a chance for pups to run around), community garden, an amphitheater for performances or just relaxing as well as baseball fields and tennis courts; there is something here everyone will enjoy!
History
The land which is now home to one of the most popular spots for nightlife in Oakland, Mosswood District, has been around since before the 1800s. The Moss that gave it its name died out a long time ago and the Wood family owned this property until 1904 without any descendants.
For decades, neighbors in the city had been pushing for their local government to purchase a plot of land and turn it into a park. However, around 1908 they were convinced that there were already plans underway by the local authorities as evidence shown when Bankers' Trust purchased the property which held until approval could be given from voters on an expensive bond measure. With hopes of opening up access to this "gem" to locals even before purchasing it themselves; officials made arrangements with residents who lived nearby so citizens would have free reign over Sundays at least!
In 1909, a plan was proposed to use the refund from People's Water Company to purchase the park instead of issuing bonds. However this plan fell through in 1911 when they authorized purchasing and made an initial payment for $20,000 on April 12th.
The park had a small zoo for a time. It started with just two deer in 1911, but by 1913 there were five deer and an aviary! The story about the Morcom Rose Garden mentions that Borax Smith offered to donate llamas too!
