In 2019, the park was renamed in honor of Dr. Aurelia Henry Reinhardt as she served as president of Mills College. She is one of five prominent civic leaders to be elected in 1934 to be a part of Park District's first Board of Directors in 1934.
Hidden within the Oakland woods is a serene redwood forest that gives little evidence of what once was. This area used to be bustling as it supplied building materials from 1880-1950s for San Francisco Bay Area's development, but now all there are left are these 150 foot tall coast Redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) and their peaceful groves.
Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park's 1833 acres offer four picnic sites for groups of 50 to 150. The site is accessible to persons with disabilities and contains a children's play structure about one-quarter mile down Stream Trail from the Canyon Meadow staging area. Wildlife in this park includes rare species such as golden eagles, Alameda striped racers, deer, rabbits and squirrels who are often seen near visitors at all times of day.
The Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, with the ability to camp and enjoy nature. Popular activities include hiking through vast forests of mighty redwoods as well as horseback riding on long trails in this beautiful park. Hikers can also take advantage of two major hikes that traverse right though the heart of it: The East Bay Skyline National Trail and Bay Area Ridge Trail are both 31 miles each!
There are several entrances to Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park. The main entrance, Redwood Gate, is on the east side of Oakland about two miles from Skyline Boulevard and can be accessed by taking Highway 13 off-ramp for a scenic drive on redwoods' edge before entering through gates at car parking lot or Big Bear Staging Area (1.5 mi).
