McClymonds High School is a public high school in the West Oakland neighborhood of Oakland, California. In addition to being one-third older than any other facility around and operating since 1887 with an enrollment over 3200 students at its disposal – McClymonds offers something no others can; A culture that has been established for 108 years now!

 

History

McClymonds High School started in a small building formerly occupied by Oakland Technical High School. Originally, 60 students were enrolled at the school which offered summer classes to accommodate those who wanted more than just grades and tests during their schooling years. It was one of California's first public vocational schools back when it opened up for business over 100 years ago.

The school was named after J.W., who at one time served as the Oakland Unified School District's superintendent and hired black teacher Ida Louise Jackson in 1949 before retiring to begin teaching full-time at her own residential college at McClymonds College less than a year later.

The McClymonds High School was a regular school from the time that it opened in 1927 with an additional $325,000 spent on classrooms. In 1933 when this building did not meet strict requirements for metal and structural support inside of schools because money had been tight during The Depression years leading up until then - but luckily enough they could afford these luxuries thanks largely due to donations.

For more than a century, McClymonds High School has been an integral part of the community. Located on 26th and Myrtle Street in Oakland it's one-block away from Lowell Junior High which opened next door just last year! In 1938 as construction began for what would become their new building--the present site at 1410 E14th St., they were renamed JW McClymonds before becoming simply 'Lowell'. Finally, after many name changes including finally settling with its current moniker; The school now houses over 2200 students each day.

Academics

The academic programs offered at McClymonds High School have been well recognized by the community and during its history, has achieved several milestones that include:

  • A longstanding 100 percent graduation rate

  • In 2004 it was named a California Distinguished School

Not only does it offer great academics but in 2014 they received an award for being one of 11 schools in America selected to receive the prestigious College Board's AP® District Honor Roll! This is a big deal since less than 20% of all high schools in this country are awarded with such honor. Not bad right? Their enrollment increased from 199 students taking AP courses back then (2004) to 305 today; An increase close to 66%. All these points taken into consideration make clear why McClymonds is a great option for those looking to attend public school.

Curriculum

The academic programs offered at McClymonds High School offer advanced placement courses, honors classes and basic education coursework as well. This way kids can choose what they like best or favor more; No one gets left behind! And if you think about it this makes complete sense especially considering how diverse McClymonds student population is compared with other schools around the area. With over 300 nationalities speaking over 70 languages spoken by its students, diversity has never been an issue here (it's actually something they celebrate!)

Amazing Faculty

McClymonds High School is a school that has been recognized for its outstanding faculty and staff. They have received awards such as the National Merit Scholarship by President Obama in 2009, which was one of their most prestigious accomplishments to date.

 Imagine what it feels like when you get called up from teaching your favorite class full time at McClymonds? You can bet these teachers know how amazing they are because they’ve won some international teaching awards too including one given by Japan just makes them more impressive.

Sports

Sports are a big part of the high school experience. For many it's how they relax after a long day at classes, for others is how one gets to know new people and make friends since most teams require you to work with your teammates in order to achieve victory or that higher spot on the rankings which brings us back to why McClymonds has been so successful over the years - their culture!

McClymonds High School offers a variety of sports, including football, baseball and basketball. The most famous team at McClyndons is the varsity basketball squad that won their state Tournament in 1978 at Oracle Arena!

Not only does their gym hold an impressive number of students (1600) but it offers state-of-the-art fitness equipment and facilities not found anywhere else around these parts. And if this isn't enough, some kids actually live by playing sports; Their baseball team won three consecutive league championships between 2010 and 2012.

McClymonds High School is one of the most diverse schools in Oakland, CA with a wide variety of academic programs and sports.
