Holy Names High School is a private Catholic girls college preparatory high school located in the Oakland hills of California. It has an enrollment of around 400 students and offers both traditional courses as well those more on-the-go, such as digital media production or first year programming languages among others.

 

History

The first high school on the shores of Lake Merritt, Holy Names was established in 1868 and now boasts an historic location. In 1931 the move to its current campus allowed for generations of students from all walks of life to come together as one community with rich history-making opportunities that will continue into future years!

The high school was founded in 1868 and opened its doors September 15, 1870. It Holy Names High School is a small, private school just outside of Oakland that houses both elementary and high schools. The campus also used to house an old convent for the Sisters from Holy Name diocese in California who are now known as "Sisters of Saint Mary."was originally an all-girls college preparatory school called the "Oakland Female Seminary." In 1897 it became Holy Names Academy for Girls when the Sisters of Saint Mary took over administration from the Christian Brothers who had run both schools since their respective openings. The academy remained open through 1969 until it closed due to financial difficulties after almost a century of service.

In October 2011, former California State Senator Jack O'Connell donated $250,000 to help reopen Holy Names High School as a private Catholic girls college preparatory high school that would honor his late mother Sister Rose O’Connell (a nun at Name). He also helped secure an additional $500,000 from the Sisters of Saint Mary and another previous donor to help reopen Holy Names.

The school opened its doors September 15th 2010 as a private high school with an enrollment of around 100 students in grades nine through eleven. The first year was spent renovating much of the campus, which now houses two adjoined schools: one for elementary (grades K-through eight) and the other is only for highschoolers (grade nine through twelve). In 2012 it graduated thirty seniors who all went on to college; today they have about 400 total students enrolled between both campuses making it California's second largest independent Catholic girls' secondary institution behind Notre Dame High School in Larkspur.

Today there are over four hundred young women enrolled in grades nine through twelve with another one hundred students in the elementary school that is right next door. Many of Holy Names alumni go on into prestigious colleges and universities around the country including Stanford, Berkeley, UCLA, UC Davis or even Yale along with many more options for higher education after graduation from high school.

Academics

The girls are offered courses year round depending on their interest between either traditional methods of learning such as regular English classes to creative ones like digital media production where they get to make films using cameras provided by Holy Names High School themselves or first-year programming languages where they learn how to write computer code which eventually lead them towards future careers in technology fields upon college graduation.

Accreditation and Accolades

Holy Names High School was accredited by the California Department of Education in 1933. Since then, its accreditation has been consistently renewed and it currently remains so for an additional ten years beyond initial approval with WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges).
