History
Castlemont High School is a public high school in Oakland, California that originally served as East Oakland's only facility and its part of the Oakland Unified School Districts named after the Castle Mountain Sanitary District which provided water for irrigation and drinking needs to many farms around Lake Merritt before it went bankrupt during colonial days (1850s). The students voted on choosing their new name: "Castlemont" came out victorious.
The Castlemont High School was founded in 1929, and the medieval-style building inspires many of their traditions. Castlemont Community of Small Schools
For a brief eight-year period, from 2004 to 2012 the large school housed three smaller schools called "the Castlemont Community of Small Schools." The small school was known by names such as:
Castlemont Leadership Preparatory High (10-12)
Castlemont Business and Information Technology School(CBITIS)
East Oakland School of the Arts (EOSA)
Freshman Prep Academy FPA
The first three schools are all located in California's Bay Area. These colleges provide students with an opportunity for a leadership education that will prepare them well to become leaders in today's highly competitive global society where technology plays such an important role.
The school reopened in the fall of 2012 as Castlemont High School, and it's already proving to be quite the success.
The small-scale experiment taking place in Fremont is a perfect example of what can happen when communities come together for change- whether that means reopening old schools or starting new ones from scratch; all while keeping our students at heart no matter where they live!
