History
The university was originally established as the Convent of Our Lady of Sacred Heart in 1868 by six members from Quebec, Canada. The Sisters were invited to Oakland and became neighbors when Father Michael King founded this school for girls with one goal-to provide teachers who could specialize or teach any subject using their extensive experience teaching others everything there is to know about education.
The College of the Holy Names was founded on Lake Merritt in 1908. The convent began offering classes at a post-secondary level and became one of the charter members for WASC, Western Association Schools and Colleges (WASC). In 1955 it had both coed graduate divisions formally established which were later renamed "graduate school" or GSMD according to what is written within their website's content management system. After the original site was purchased by Henry J. Kaiser, he constructed a building that is now known as The Kaiser Building and Holy Names school moved to its current location in Oakland Hills where it became coeducational at the undergraduate level with a name change from Holy Name College on September 19th, 1971; Julia Morgan School for Girls had classes up until 1999-2001 but then took over two years (1999–01) while enrolling females into its new campus located near downtown Loma Linda California which has beautiful views overlooking an open space called Tienken Park among others. It officially reopened under this moniker "newest Catholic university" within ten days on May 10th, 2004 when we adopted it.
