Oakland International High School opened its doors in 2007 to students who are recent immigrants, in need of an education. The school was created with the support from The Internationals Network for Public Schools and Oakland Unified School District as well as being funded by a partnership between Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
The school was established in order to better accommodate the growing number of students that have been arriving from overseas since the 1990s.
In order for a student to be admitted they must:
Have immigrated into the United States within the last three years.
Have a solid grasp on English language skills while being able to communicate in another language as well, such as Spanish or Mandarin Chinese.
Be at least 16-years old upon enrollment for high school education.
Demonstrated need of an educational program that provides more time and support than traditional schools can offer, due to their immigration status.
History
Oakland International High School is a member of The Internationals Network for Public Schools, an organization that grew out of the work of this group. It now supports 12 schools in New York and California with over 50 countries participating as members including LaGuardia Community College's first international high school which opened up back in 1985.
Curriculum
The curriculum follows the California standards by meeting requirements from both Common Core State Standards and Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs). The students are expected to take part in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme during their senior year which will help them prepare for college life since it is recognized worldwide with different universities accepting credits earned throughout this course.
The high school students at Oakland International High School come from over 50 countries and speak more than 40 languages. These students are provided with a wide range of English as Second Language (ESL) courses to help them adjust to the American education system. In order for any student to graduate they must pass all their classes and meet set language requirements- both written and oral. The graduation rate for this school is 98 percent which makes it one of the highest in California as well as being higher than some public schools nationally.
Personalized, Small-scale Education
At Oakland International, a small school with only 100 students in each grade level and emphasis on team building allows for personalization. From their first two years at the institution up until their junior or senior year when seniors have opportunities to get involved outside of class including internships which will make them more well rounded than most schools can offer.
Internationals Approach
The Oakland International High School believes that language acquisition is best fostered in an academic environment. The school's teachers are trained with the Internationals Approach, which emphasizes participation and hands-on projects for all subjects to provide students new skills as they learn about academically rigorous content like art or music while also developing their English reading comprehension skills at home through activities such as homework assignments shared between parents and tutors online using technology tools available on today’s modern devices.
