Madison Park Academy of Engineering and Graphic Design has an enrollment of 800 students in grades 6 through 12. Their school is located in the East Oakland neighborhood of Sobrante Park. Since 1958, their middle school has served the neighborhood. Their high school is relatively new; their first senior class finished with a 91 percent graduation rate in 2017. (20 percent higher than the district average). In the 2018 graduating class, 74% of our students were accepted to four-year colleges and institutions, including 11% going to UC Berkeley.
Their students are a close-knit community who are extremely resilient, advocate for themselves and others, and possess tremendous linguistic and cultural capital. Their kids are all students of color (80% Latino and 15% African American) who are eligible for free or reduced lunch. Their students reside in an area of East Oakland where trauma is common; as a result, we are a community school that uses restorative methods to meet our students' social emotional needs.
MPA's objective is for our students to graduate college and job ready as inventive, creative problem solvers who display character and aspire to make the world a better place for themselves and others. Their objective is to get to know all of their students and to provide them with relevant, authentic, interdisciplinary project-based learning experiences both inside and outside of the classroom.
They used Standards Based Grading at MPA (SBG). Students and educators can use SBG to better identify what standards a student genuinely understands and masters as they advance through their schooling. To measure students' comprehension and grasp of grade level content, we use proficiency scores.
MPA's planning, organization, and teaching procedures all revolve around college readiness. We work hard to ensure that our students have the skills and tools they need to pursue further education.
Madison Park Academy's inaugural senior class (2017) graduated with a 90.7 percent cohort graduation rate, which was the third highest in the district.
Today, about a third of kids in the United States graduate from high school without the skills they need to succeed in college, work in the twenty-first century, or support their families. The situation is significantly worse for low-income pupils. This is something that Linked Learning Pathways can help with.
Internships provide students with the opportunity to gain practical experience in the workplace while also applying what they've studied in the classroom. They make every effort to arrange internships that provide both valuable experience and financial compensation. These are excellent ways to improve your résumé, and you may even be able to work on-site!
