Aspire Lionel Wilson Preparatory Academy is named after Lionel Wilson, Oakland's first black mayor. Mr. Wilson was Oakland's mayor for three terms. He was well-known for his ability to bring disparate groups together and work toward growth and positive change. When we set clear behavioral requirements and focus on positive progress and high aspirations, we honor him and encourage our pupils. They ask that families, teachers, and members of the community focus on academic accomplishment as well as a culture of respect and problem-solving.
LWP is trying to improve literacy and explore personal pathways so that students and families can create a realistic and attainable plan to help their children achieve their full potential. They all know how important solid partnerships are in a child's education. We share responsibility for their children's development as partners, with a larger teaching and support staff, more opportunities for kids to pursue their interests, and a dedication to striking a balance between a more difficult curriculum and additional support. Because they believe that all students should thrive and graduate critically literate and free to pick their college, career, and life path, we aim to embrace choice and challenge.
