1. Temescal Regional Recreation Area

Temescal Regional Recreation Area, formerly Lake Temescal Park, is a wonderful 48-acre escape from the hustle and bustle of east Oakland. It's situated in the picturesque Berkeley Hills near SR 24 and 13 - just southwest of the Caldecott Tunnel. The park offers an incredible natural respite to city dwellers who want to reconnect with nature or even just take some time out for themselves! Thanks to East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD), you can enjoy this unique slice of an urban oasis right here in beautiful Oakland.

Anthony Chabot used his expertise in high-pressure water cannons from extracting gold out of the Sierra Nevada Mountains to create Lake Temescal - a reservoir built for supplying Oakland, California with drinking water. This ambitious feat was accomplished by blasting walls above Temescal Creek and using dirt & rocks recovered from the creek bottom to construct an earthen dam across it. The Contra Costa Water Company that he formed pumped these cold waters into homes all throughout Oakland.

In less than a decade, Oakland's population blossomed from 10,000 to an impressive 25,000. To help keep up with the city's needs for water supply and growth potential in mind, Lake Temescal was upgraded by Chabot’s Company who shifted farther south to build what is now known as majestic Lake Chabot – leaving their original lake project behind but still utilizing it as a secondary source of water supply.

Lake Temescal is the crowning jewel of this charming park, surrounded by trails to explore, picnic areas with stunning views, and lush forest habitats teeming with birdlife. With a fascinating past as one of Oakland's original drinking water reservoirs constructed back in 1936 – it was one of three parks opened that same year by the East Bay Regional Park District.

Situated on the edge of a tranquil lake, stands Beach House - an awe-inspiring building with plenty of character. Built by Civilian Conservation Corps workers in 1940, it's now available to rent for special occasions like get-togethers and birthday parties.

2. Robert Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve

Get your morning coffee shop fix, then lace up those shoes and explore some of the amazing outdoor spots in East Bay! With crystal clear skies overhead, a hike at Robert Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve is the perfect way to enjoy all that nature has to offer.

Tucked away in the Oakland Hills of the San Francisco Bay area, Robert Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve is a hidden gem for nature lovers! Spread across 928 acres (3.76 km2), this park spans both Contra Costa County and Alameda County - offering amazing hiking trails with breathtaking views. Skyline Boulevard or Old Tunnel Road are two entrances to access this peaceful oasis near Oakland.

Sibley Regional Preserve is one of the oldest parks in East Bay, founded back in 1936. It has an impressive history - it used to be called Round Top Park and was named after Robert Sibby shortly after his death. Even more interesting? The park sits atop a 10 million-year-old extinct volcano! U.C Berkeley Professor Emeritus Garniss Curtis researched this ancient relic for years and discovered that its age corresponds with when the Pacific tectonic plate began pushing northward over time. Plus there are two mysterious stone labyrinths within these grounds too – now how cool is that?!

The beautiful preserve has something for everyone! Whether you want to explore the trails by foot or horseback, cruise up Round Top Road on your bike in style, or camp under the stars with a million friends - there are paths and activities awaiting. And don't forget about taking time out of your day-trip adventures to rest at one of many benches scattered throughout –these have some truly remarkable views that promise not only relaxation but also snacks. For those wanting an educational journey through history—paved both literally and figuratively–a self-guided tour from the visitor center unveils fascinating geological stories waiting just beyond Skyline Boulevard entrance.
