Whether you want a quick bite or an all-day adventure this place has it all!

The Nut Tree is a landmark for those who have driven down I-80 in Vacaville. It's known as the state’s first major road stop, and it draws Californians with its eclectic mix of western California cuisine (which some say they originated), packaged dried fruits, miniature railroad, fly-in airport, and retail offerings.

History of Nut Tree

  • The Nut Tree has been around since 1921 when George Power set up a modest fruit stand along I-80. He had no idea that he was starting his own business but so it came to be!

  • The family grew their roadside spot into what would become one of America's most iconic businesses; more than just an American wholesaler or retailer at large scale -- this company also creates products like nuts from Almonds to Walnuts. Nut Tree is a name that people all over the world know and love.

The Nut Tree Restaurant

The Nut Tree Restaurant was an early pioneer of California cuisine, with fresh fruits and vegetables featured in the recipes.

  • By 1978, it became identified as the region's most characteristic and influential restaurant because not only did they serve a variety of dishes made from organic ingredients grown on their own farm but also small loaves of wheat or rye bread cooked fresh daily on-premises.

  • Unlike many other restaurants at that time that had either indoor plants or live birds to create ambiance for diners, The Nut Tree took things one step further by building aviaries inside so people could enjoy looking up into trees while eating breakfast!

  • When Nut Tree Catering Company was founded in 1952, they were eager to work with celebrities.

  • They welcomed and catered for them before the term celebrity even existed! When California Governor Ronald Reagan became governor of California, he not only hired Nut Tree as his personal catering service but also showed up at their ribbon-cutting ceremony when opening a new location.

  • Celebrities such as Richard Nixon, Shirley Temple Black, Danny Kaye have all visited this company's locations throughout time.

  • On March 4th, 1983 they served Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip at an exclusive luncheon hosted by George Deukmejian who was then elected Governor of California just 2 weeks prior on February 27th, 1983. And if that wasn't fun enough: it seems like Nut Tree Catering Company's signature Nut Tree Salad was a favorite of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip!

Closure and Reopening

The Nut Tree was a popular attraction in Vacaville, California until it shut down operations in 1996 due to financial issues caused by the family feud that led them into court. The buildings were demolished and all traces of this once-popular landmark disappeared overnight.

After being closed for years, the Nut Tree reopened in 2006 with a mixed-use development that includes a children's amusement park called Nut Tree Family Park. More amenities are to come such as a bocce ball court and restaurants. It closed again after several months due to some unfortunate incidents. It opened again in October 2009 under new management who hopes to bring back all the old memories from before 2004 while still giving everyone something different now like more shops and stores nearby or even other businesses coming into town.

Nut Tree Today

It's hard to believe that this bustling California landmark was once a small rural outpost. Today, the Nut Tree is home to over 250 shops and restaurants from national chains like Gap, Banana Republic, JCPenney; as well as local favorites such as The Cheese Store of San Francisco & Morton’s Steakhouse.

In a state known for its outdoors, The Nut Tree Plaza in Vacaville California is the perfect place to be! With an amusement park, restaurants, stores, and everything else under the sun all on-site there's something here for everyone. Choose something quick or stick around all day to have fun!

People have been coming down here for years because it has everything they need - even if they don't know what exactly they're looking for!
