South Berkeley is part of the old Rancho San Antonio, approximately 45,000 acres of land granted to Luis Maria Peralta in 1820 by Don Pablo Vicente de Sola, Governor of Alta California, in recognition of his forty years of military service and work in establishing the missions of Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, and San Jose. Peralta split his estate between his four sons in 1842. The northernmost section, covering present-day Berkeley and Albany, was granted to José Domingo Peralta.

The Pence Gallery is a non-profit art organization located in downtown Davis. Its name derives from benefactors Joe and Hazel Pence. The building, once the site of Dr. Joseph Pence’s thriving dental practice, was gifted to the city of Davis. Community members petitioned for its use as a venue for changing displays of contemporary art, and won the right to use the facility and grounds in 1975.
Their current facility, unveiled in February 2005, was designed by Barcelon Jang Architecture, San Francisco.
